This year’s AGM on 30 November marked a year during which an unprecedented 12 new members were welcomed to the club, many of whom were present to see trophies presented to some of this year’s winners. The full list can be seen below.
Most of the finals were played in one of two finals weekends, in July and August, both played in excellent weather. During the August finals, we were pleased to welcome the Mayor and Mayoress of Reigate & Banstead, Cllr Rich Michalowski, and his wife Michelle Gibney.
They watched both AC and GC games and presented some of our trophies during the afternoon before taking the opportunity to pick up a mallet and try a few shots.
Cllr Michalowski had been invited to visit the club by Frank Burch, whom he had met during a town-twinning trip to Germany and had invited initially to the rained-off Open Day earlier in the summer. Like a good politician, he was non-committal when asked if he would take up the game, saying that he had a very busy year ahead, thanks to his mayoral duties.
He has previously held responsibilities for sports in the borough, first as the council’s Executive Member for Leisure and Culture in 2020 and, prior to his his election as Mayor, as its Executive Member for Place, Planning Policy and Regulatory Services, which includes some sport activities, such as encouraging sports clubs to seek funding for their activities.
National sporting success can stimulate grassroots interest, he said, mentioning in particular the Lionesses success at the Women’s Euros. That prompted so much interest that local football organisers had called for new pitches, assuring the council that “if you keep building pitches, we’ll fill them,” he said.
For croquet, he appeared supportive of bringing the Priory Park croquet lawn up to competitive standards and suggested that funding might be available through the Community Infrastructure Levy, which is paid by developers to help fund the infrastructure, facilities and services that the future residents and businesses will need.
Asked if he had enjoyed watching the croquet, he recalled noticing the club in the past and wondering what was going on. Having now experienced it for himself, “it’s fascinating,” he said.
