John and I have been managing the BBQ for around 30 years, but this year’s event was one of the best. This was mainly because our neighbours, Alex and Claire at Geranium cottage, very kindly offered their pretty garden for us to use, which enabled us to spread out. The wind dropped, the sun shone and 32 members, family and friends enjoyed a pleasant summer evening.
This year it was decided to separate the BBQ from the July Finals, so the event started in the afternoon with very successful Alternate Shot Doubles mini games, organised by Martin Peacock, which enabled golf and association players to mingle.
Thanks are due to Andrew Gray and Ian Cobbold who nobly manned the BBQs, expertly cooking wild boar and apple sausages, steak burgers and chicken supplied by our nearby butcher. Pat Slade, Lorna Jenkins, Jean Cobbold and Lester Gould provided tasty salads and Martin Holland, Sue Rice, Esther Lewis and Caroline Barnard delicious puds. Frank Burch ordered a small keg of superior beer from the Pilgrim brewery, and was most relieved that there was none left on Sunday for him to finish off.
Thanks to all who provided raffle prizes, which enabled ticket seller Martin Holland to raise a tidy sum for the club funds.
