This competition, which is an inter-club level play golf tournament with teams of four played over two days, attracted an entry of eight clubs. The first seven rounds take the form of a round robin (all play all) with each round comprising one double and two singles matches. All players must play as nearly as possible equal numbers of doubles and singles.
Our Saturday team comprising John and Freda Knight, Chris O’Byrne and Doug Dykes had a very good day winning four matches with some judicious allocation of players on the part of captain John and leaving one match tied at one singles win each. Doug won all his games, as did Chris with some spectacular shots.
On Sunday a completely different team comprising Simon Ling, Martin Holland, John Stadden and Sally Mackinlay took over and by losing our first double lost the part completed match. However things improved from there and we won the remaining two matches so that we tied with Cheam on six wins out of seven at the conclusion of the first stage.
The final comprised two rounds with the doubles and singles changing places for the second round. This resulted in a 4 – 2 win for Reigate with John and Sally being the stars of the show.
There were some closely fought contests with a number of golden hoops called into play. Excellent catering and organisation backed up an enjoyable two days. The Sunday team got to lift the trophy, but a very solid foundation had been laid on Saturday.
